Searching For Grandfathers
'Genealogy For The Family Historian'
A website dedicated to helping others make genealogical research easy.
Genealogy. The passion for discovering our ancestors. The never ending thirst for searching for grandfathers, grandmothers, long-ago family members. The hobby of genealogical research that was once a small past-time for some has grown into a full-time exploration for many. Wondering who came before us. Learning about our great great grandparents and the struggles they had to endure. Looking at a military record and realizing your ancestor fought in the American Revolution or perhaps struggled to build a farm in the wilderness only to die of a disease that we no longer have to worry about. It's the realization that we came from something greater than ourselves. Generations of ancestors, many immigrating from other countries, are strangers to us on paper yet getting to know them brings self awareness and a connection to our past.
I am not a professional genealogist. I'm a granddaughter that began a search to learn about a man I never knew, my maternal grandfather. And in my desire to learn a little bit about my grandfather Glenn, I discovered I had grandfathers who fought in the Civil War, War of 1812, and American Revolution. Grandmothers who became widows and struggled to maintain farms and raise children on their own. Immigrant ancestors who uprooted their families to spend days perhaps weeks on boats full of souls searching for a better life. It's a search that keeps pulling you back in every time you find one more ancestor, one more glimpse into who and where you came from.
The hobby of genealogy is quickly growing into a big business for many. With the growth of the internet, organizations are digitizing more and more vital records, making the discovery of ancestors only a click away. Yet with business comes money and searching too extensively is not only time consuming but sometimes expensive. That is what I hope to help other family historians and genealogists like myself do. Provide tips and suggestions, recommend websites and organizations and even allow you to search for your own ancestors in my family history book. Hopefully making your search a little easier and less costly. Lessons learned from my personal highs and lows in that never ending quest for my grandfathers.
